# Criminal record checks with a fingerprint device

Capture fingerprints on a device and submit criminal record checks.

**Who it is for:** clients who capture fingerprints on their own premises for the [Standard criminal record check](https://developer.fraudcheck.co.za/product/screening/criminal-records/standard).

## Before you start

A criminal record check needs the person's first name, last name, ID number, date of birth and gender, the reason for the enquiry, their consent and, for a first check, all 10 fingerprints captured on an approved fingerprint device on your premises.

Checks are submitted through our standalone desktop software specifically designed to capture and process fingerprints. Fraudcheck provides standalone documentation for setting up the device and submitting checks; contact your account manager for it.

If the person cannot get to a device, Fraudcheck can arrange for their fingerprints to be taken at a participating PostNet or Jetline store.

## Submitting and tracking

Submit the person's details and fingerprints, choosing the turnaround tier:

| Tier     | Turnaround  |
| -------- | ----------- |
| Standard | 24–48 hours |
| Premium  | 4–6 hours   |
| Priority | 1–2 hours   |

Once Fraudcheck holds a person's fingerprints from an earlier check, a further check can be submitted without capturing them again. Their personal details and consent are still required.

For educators, *Criminal record SACE* also validates the person's registration with the South African Council for Educators, at the Standard tier.

## Results

The result is one of *No record found*, *Record found* or *SAPS pending*, with a report and an extract from the SAPS database. Where the full charge or conviction detail is needed, a SAP69 report can be requested separately; it generally takes 6–8 weeks. See the [product page](https://developer.fraudcheck.co.za/product/screening/criminal-records/standard) for what the report contains.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.fraudcheck.co.za/guides/process-guides/criminal-record-checks.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
