# Data sources and turnaround

Where results come from and how long checks take.

## Why turnaround varies

Turnaround depends on the data source, not on Fraudcheck's own processing. Many checks query their source in real time and return in seconds. Others depend on a third party: criminal record checks depend on the South African Police Service (SAPS); matric and tertiary checks depend on Umalusi or individual institutions; and some criminal record fingerprints are captured at PostNet or Jetline stores. Where a faster turnaround exists for the same check, such as the Standard, Premium and Priority criminal record variants, it is offered as a separate variant.

## On-file and online identity checks

**On-file** checks read records held by credit bureaus and other verified third-party sources. They cover roughly 80–85% of the South African population at lower cost. **Online** checks query the Department of Home Affairs directly for maximum coverage and the most current record, at a higher cost per check. Some identity products, such as [Identity Verification - Enhanced](/product/products/verification/identity/enhanced.md), let you choose.

## Sources and typical turnaround

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.fraudcheck.co.za/product/overview/how-it-works/data-sources.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
