# Individual bank account verification

Confirms a personal bank account is real, open and able to receive funds, and that it belongs to the named holder.

Confirms a South African bank account is real, open and able to receive funds, and that the account holder's identity matches the name on record with the bank.

## How it works

Submit the account holder's identity, name and bank details in one request, using whichever of three modes matches the holder's identification: South African ID, South African passport or foreign passport. The bank is queried live.

## What it returns

An overall result; six gating checks, each pass or fail (account found, ID match, surname match, account open, accepts debits, accepts credits); supporting flags (initials match, dormancy, account open for at least 3 months); and the account details returned by the bank (bank, account type, branch and account number).

## Inputs required

The account holder's ID or passport number, first name and surname (middle name optional), bank name, account number, account type and, where known, branch code. If the branch code is missing or invalid, the bank's default branch code is used.

## Data source

The account holder's bank, queried live.

## Consent and permissible purpose

You must obtain the data subject's consent before running this check, and confirm on each request that you have it. You keep the proof of consent; Fraudcheck records that you confirmed it. See [Consent and permissible use](/product/overview/how-it-works/consent.md).

## Channels

Portal and API. For request and response detail, see the [API reference](https://developer.fraudcheck.co.za/consumer-service/credit-and-financial-risk/bank-account-verification).

## Outcomes

* **Accept**: all gating checks passed.
* **Reject**: at least one gating check failed.

## Turnaround

Near real-time, typically 2–5 seconds.

## When to use it

Validating a beneficiary's account before a payment or EFT, confirming a debit order will succeed before submitting it, verifying banking details during onboarding, or catching fraud where submitted account details do not match the named holder.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.fraudcheck.co.za/product/products/verification/bank-account/individual.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
