# Driver's licence verification

Confirms a South African driver's licence is real and valid, and whether the holder has a professional driving permit.

Confirms that a person's South African driver's licence is real and valid. It also confirms whether they hold a Professional Driving Permit (PrDP or PDP).

## How it works

The licence details are submitted for verification and you receive a reference while the check is processed.

## What it returns

An overall verification result, plus the date of issue, date of expiry and whether a PrDP is present.

## Inputs required

The licence holder's first name, last name, ID or passport number, cell number and country of birth, plus the licence number and licence type.

## Data source

Department of Transport records.

## Consent and permissible purpose

You must obtain the data subject's consent before running this check, and confirm on each request that you have it. You keep the proof of consent; Fraudcheck records that you confirmed it. See [Consent and permissible use](/product/overview/how-it-works/consent.md).

## Channels

Portal and API. For request, polling and response details, see the [API reference](https://developer.fraudcheck.co.za/consumer-service/identity/driver-licence-verification).

## Outcomes

The initial submission returns **Pending** while the verification is processed. Once complete, the result includes the overall screening result and a normalised licence-validity value:

* **Valid**: the returned licence record is valid.
* **Invalid**: the returned licence record is not valid.
* **Unknown**: validity could not be determined from the returned record.

If the source returns no validity information, the value is left empty.

The result also contains the verified licence class, issue and expiry dates, restrictions and any verifier comments. Use the [API reference](https://developer.fraudcheck.co.za/consumer-service/identity/driver-licence-verification) for the exact response fields.

## Turnaround

Typically 24–48 hours. The result is not immediate: see [Results and outcomes](/product/overview/how-it-works/results-and-outcomes.md) for how pending results work.

## When to use it

Validating a person's driver's licence, licence type or professional driving status. Suited to high-assurance environments where checking a copy of a licence by eye is not enough.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.fraudcheck.co.za/product/products/verification/drivers-licence.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
