# Identity Verification - Basic

Confirms an ID number belongs to the name supplied.

A lightweight registry check that confirms a South African ID number belongs to the name supplied against it. It confirms the identity exists and that the details match the record, with no document or selfie required.

## How it works

Each request is checked against several on-file identity data sources, with routing and failover handled automatically: if one source does not respond, the request is retried against another without any extra work on your side. If no on-file source has a record and you have opted in, the request escalates to a live Department of Home Affairs (DHA) lookup for harder-to-verify identities.

Name matching tolerates common real-world variance, such as spelling differences, missing middle names, or first and last names in the wrong order, while still requiring a close match on surname and ID number, so it will not accept a genuinely different identity. Matching can be configured per request.

## What it returns

A match outcome of Accept, Reject or Not Found, based on the ID number and name supplied.

## Inputs required

A South African ID number, first name and last name.

## Data source

On-file identity data sources, generally credit bureau datasets, which cost far less than live DHA calls for simple, low-risk checks. Requests can optionally escalate to a live DHA lookup when no on-file record exists.

## Consent and permissible purpose

You must obtain the data subject's consent before running this check, and confirm on each request that you have it. You keep the proof of consent; Fraudcheck records that you confirmed it. See [Consent and permissible use](/product/overview/how-it-works/consent.md).

## Channels

Portal and API. For request and response detail, see the [API reference](https://developer.fraudcheck.co.za/consumer-service/identity/basic-identity-verification).

## Outcomes

* **Accept**: the ID number exists and matches the name supplied.
* **Reject**: the details do not match the record.
* **Not found**: no record was found for the ID number.

## Turnaround

Near real-time, typically under 5 seconds. Requests that escalate to a live DHA lookup can take longer.

## When to use it

Low-risk checks where confirming that an identity is real and correctly captured is enough. It is low-friction and low-cost, so it suits high-volume environments.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.fraudcheck.co.za/product/products/verification/identity/basic.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
